Howzit y’all? Over the Memorial Day weekend and with world events being what they are I’ve had another poem kind of just bubbling beneath the surface inside my mind mansion. With all the social media I’ve been consuming and resources I’ve been picking up, I felt inspired by the sight of the Palestinian flag being flown at protests and rallies worldwide. As anyone that’s a writer will know, once the call of the pen is heard you answer. With those thoughts in mind I’d like to present a new poetic work I’m calling “Colorful Revolution”
Black, red, green and white; steadfast colors clung to all through the night.
Bomb blasts and silence punctuated by staccato small arms fire.
Drones overheard droning, in attempt to drown out oppressed people with noise pollution.
Spirit like their olive trees, uprooted again and again; yet determined to survive.
Population of children, bombed and buried. Drones overhead, pumping children’s screaming cries into the air.
Parents and relatives, desperate to find kin under rubble.
Only to be buried alongside them with explosive finale once search for survivors begun.
Apartheid oppression on view for world to see, wondering when Palestine will be free.
World leaders’ recognition, all calling for cease to slaughter.
Protests in streets, on campuses, all seeking to change world for the better.
Wandering through subconscious as I pen an open letter.
Dearly departed, as you all look down I wonder… do you see us fighting?
In all the ways we can, each of us, striving to make the world kinder than when you left it.
Protests in the streets, boycotting companies and products both.
Politicians public approval like King Charles painting…
Portrait shaded and soaked through in blood, suffering, death.
Through all the muck and grime…
Your flag flown proudly as millions worldwide chant in unison.
From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.
Slice of watermelon aloft in one hand, other fist clenched and held aloft in resistance.
For now? As the faithful press ever onward, bent on changing toxic status quo…
United in spirit, in heart, waiting for a day where united, we can all yell Viva Libertad Palestine!
