What’s up y’all? Hopefully you’re staying safe during this period of time. I wanted to touch on something I’ve mentioned on my blog before. Love. Four letters with so very much behind them. Plenty of songs, books and more have been made to “flesh out” what love is.
Personally this is a rather interesting thing to talk about. I’ve had several relationships in my adult life and with each of those women I can say that I did love them, to the best of my ability. Admittedly I’m no longer in those relationships, though I will say that I learned a great deal about myself in those relationships.
One of my favorite passages in scripture is in 1 Corinthians 13: 1-13. It’s a beautiful group of scriptures and paints a very clear picture as to what the nature of love is. Interestingly I feel like music, books, and pop culture in general has portrayed love in a generally…..untrue way.
Now I’m not saying that there aren’t love songs that accurately portray what love should feel like. There’s a reason I like country music aside from the fact that I’m from the Midwest. Just a bridge crossing from Kentucky and where the bluegrass grows.
My upbringing included a lot of time watching TV, lots of time in the library reading books most young men my age wouldn’t dream of. I mean after all….who, other than me would be reading Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Lord Byron? I have….shall we say a heavy leaning towards traditional pursuit of love. I abhor when dating is referred to as a game. I think the word dating is interchangeable with the word courtship.
I have many thoughts on love. Quite a few love songs stuck on repeat in my head. Personally I think that over time the idea of legitimate, real love is exceedingly rare to come by. The first part of that group of verses? Love IS PATIENT. People my age? Largely there’s no patience when it comes to the important things like love.
Most people my age? Interested in getting lucky as soon as possible. I waited until I was twenty four until my first kiss. Another full year until sex. I didn’t want something like a first kiss to be cheap. Call me old fashioned and I”l tell y’all I’m vintage. The thing is I’ve got the belief that there’s a reason the most important things like love are worth being patient and fighting for.
The Bible says out of faith hope and love the greatest of these is love. I feel like over time love unfortunately has been cheapened due to the sugared bubble gum pop music crap put out by twits like Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers. Saying how they love the blueish, greenish brownish color of the girls eyes.
Over time love, unfortunately has been watered down but I’ve always kind of walked to the beat of my own drums. I guess I’m just a tad frustrated that one of the most important experiences in life has been so…..watered down and diluted by unwillingness to wait. Mix that with nearly ninety percent of pop culture misleading my generation and those who came after my generation? Just seems like love is one of those things to be treasured and protected.
It’s a shame that one of the greatest things mankind can experience isn’t appreciated and valued the way it should be. Faith, hope and love. The greatest of these is love.
I hope my friends that you don’t skip out on the chance to end those phone calls with family by telling them you love them. By showing those you’re either pursuing or developing feelings for that you ARE interested in what’s bothering them. By fighting for them, even if that’s only through prayer. Prayer is a mighty tool my friends… Don’t settle for the bubble-gum cookie cutter pop out “love”.
Love is patient, as it is in the world now I feel like we can all be a little more patient with other humans. After all we’re supposed to love our neighbors as ourselves right? Maybe if the world had a couple few more people pursuing love there’d be a bit more hope out there.
Rapha Yada my friends,
Richard
