Current Events & How Fear Makes Us Do Stupid Crap.

How’s it going y’all? I’m proud to be back blogging more regularly. You may not believe it but writer’s block is definitely a thing. In any case if y’all have been watching the news or online at all. You’ve likely heard about the corona virus.

Now personally I think it’s definitely something to keep an eye on. However I don’t think that it warrants nearly the amount of news coverage talking about pandemics and death stats and all that nonsense. In my opinion, if all the nations is given to hear about is some “potentially fatal pandemic” is going to kill us all then sooner or later people get stupid.

A perfect example of this is that I went to the store the other day at my local Wal-Mart. Out of curiosity I went to see if people were ACTUALLY buying just insane amounts of toilet paper. I’d seen memes about it on Facebook and was like this can’t be real.

No joke, it’s real. Real, and completely freaking insane. Like there is no medical reason to have 20 bottles of Germ-x, let alone 20 packs of toilet paper with 10 in each pack. I mean….that’s just nuts. If you need that much toilet paper you’ve got way more in your life to worry about then some virus.

The point I’m getting to is this. Fear leads to some pretty crazy decisions quite a bit of the time. Sometimes fear blinds us, or freezes us with indecision. There’s a quote on fear I’m quite fond of… “I must not fear, fear is the mind killer.”

Look around, big tech companies and huge gaming companies are shutting down these insanely large conferences which cost a LOT to put on. Due to fear and the media exploiting that fear, now it’s affecting our finances. Literally because people are spreading fear. News outlets, Social Media sources, newspapers…..Well guess what y’all? Those source are profiting off our fear.

I’d challenge y’all to educate yourselves versus simply buying into more fear. Way I look at it is that I’m 29 years old….Now to put that in perspective I was born in 1991, I was eight years old when Y2K occurred. Now looking back I can see how that was a scary thing for a variety of reasons.

However it gets better, I was 10 when the Twin Towers fell, another tragedy. I’ve lived through several previous and current crap presidents. I’ve heard of swine flu, bird flu, several people going nuts and shooting places up.

All I’m saying is that typically? These things occur in times of political change, take a look and a timeline of tragedies then run that against political news during those time periods and you’ll see a connection.

I guess my point is that I’ve been through several monumental shifts in the world during my lifetime. Throughout that, I’m fine. Living in fear isn’t truly living y’all. It blinds us to possibilities, fact of the matter is I’m getting ready to go on a mini-vacation outside the country in the next month. In spite of everything going on.

Why? Because for me the Bible gives me a different outlook than most. An incredibly poetic and direct way of speaking. Matthew 6:25-34 states

25“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26“Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27“And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28“And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30“But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32“For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

I mean to me the answer seems pretty clear. Even if you don’t believe in or follow Christ you have to admit there’s some fairly good points. Who by being worried can add any time to their life? The answer of course is nobody. So for me I think I’m going to choose to not live in fear. I mean after all my tattoo says hupernikao. More than a conqueror, that’s how I want to live my life.

As it stands, I feel like there’s a lot of people dealing with fear. These are just some of my thoughts on current events and how fear and spreading fear is affecting those events. That being said I may end up doing another blog post about fear, because after all there are many fears. H.P Lovecraft said it best “The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.”
